From the Vault: Castle Rock Pinot Noir
One of my favorite Saturday night spots is the Jane Street Tavern in the West Village. Jane Street is the true expression of a tavern: cozy if it's snowing, cool if it's humid, inviting always. In true innkeeper's spirit, this is the place the feeds the Christmas tree vendors who set up shop on Jane Street the day after Thanksgiving and don't return to their own New England homes until Christmas morning.
I have had many wonderful meals in this warm, historic space -- almost always a blue cheese burger with potato gratin and the best yankee cole slaw I've found. It is also the place I first encountered some of my favorite wines, courtesy of their thoughtfully curated list. Jane Street is where I first encountered Babich Marlboro Sauvignon Blanc, a sprightly white with sparkly green apple top notes and a deft expression of the minerality that teases through the best juice from this grape. As for reds, here is a post I did for slashfood concerning a luscious pour that I first tasted at Jane Street: Castle Rock Pinot Noir, a wine which continues to gather momentum among tasters. This post also got picked up by the online wine community Scrugy.
